Shailen
Shailen (he/him) is a 14-year-old who loves sharing his story to spread positivity and joy. Like many young people, Shailen has a deep connection to the characters in stories and movies from his childhood. Books like Alex Gino’s Melissa and characters like Iron Man showed him the power of embracing who you are, unapologetically. Whether immersed in Shakespeare or enjoying Broadway musicals like Rent or Hamilton, storytelling is where Shailen feels the most connected.
Dancing Kathak, one of the nine major classical Indian dances, has allowed Shailen to express stories through movement. When he’s not dancing or acting, he enjoys playing the piano and downhill skiing. He can also be found on the soccer field, where he has learned teamwork, confidence, and the importance of acceptance. Through soccer, Shailen found a supportive community where he can be himself without hesitation.
Shailen hopes that by sharing his story, people will see beyond labels and understand that all kids, including transgender kids, deserve respect, acceptance, and the chance to pursue their dreams without barriers.
